The Downeast Goldmine with Audrey Ryan

The Downeast Goldmine with Audrey Ryan In-Person

Town Hill native Audrey Ryan will discuss the modern aspects of smuggling history on Mount Desert Island, exploring marijuana and hashish smuggling in the 70s and 80s. Inspired by her father’s experience dragging up “sea hash,” she has been researching and writing “Downeast Goldmine” since 2011. Her article “Overboard: The Big Catch” was the Boston Globe Magazine’s May 7, 2023 cover story.

About Audrey Ryan

I started this project in 2009 and still find myself collecting new details of the sea hash legend. For well over a decade, I’ve chased down elusive fishermen at their boats or in their homes, gone digging for archival newspaper articles on microfilm in old dusty basement libraries, and traveled across Maine to the sites where the drug smuggling occurred over forty years ago. My connection to the subject matter is wholly personal, having been born and raised in Maine with a father who was immersed in the fishing community. The characters of the book are the same people who permeated my childhood. My fascination with this time and place has only grown.

Audrey has a Master's degree and Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology and a Bachelor’s degree in English. Currently, Audrey is a psychiatric consultant, professor, and writer. She lives in Newton, MA with her husband and two children.
