Maine St. Andrew's Pipes & Drums In-Person
Maine St. Andrews Pipes & Drums (MSAPD) was formed in 1996 when two well-known bagpipe bands, Northern Border Caledonia and Acadian Pipes & Drums, merged. Led by Pipe Major Scott Heney and Drum Major Anthea O'Neal, the band has musicians with a wide range of experience — from beginners with less than six months of practice to experts with over 45 years of experience. Members and new learners come from Central, Midcoast, and Downeast Maine to Ellsworth for weekly rehearsals.
Following the traditions of the original bands, MSAPD performs in parades and concerts across Maine, competes in the Highland Games in New England and Canada, and provides educational presentations to school children.
The band proudly wears the Maine State Tartan, designed in 1964 and believed to be the oldest district tartan in the United States. Its colors represent different aspects of Maine: light blue for the sky, dark blue for the waters, dark green for the forests, and a thin red line for the bloodline of the people.
The band invites everyone, regardless of experience, to join a rehearsal. If you’re interested, please call ahead for the time and location. MSAPD offer free quality instruction in Highland piping and drumming to new learners during rehearsals, and private lessons are also available.
